Rain, mud, puddles everywhere… great weather for fish! 🐟
Our youth teams embraced the soggy conditions this weekend, slipping, sliding, and smiling their way through a proper dose of grassroots rugby. If you went home clean, you probably weren’t trying hard enough.
Here are the highlights:
Under 6s | Hattie
Under 7s | Rex & Beau
Under 8s | Emily & George
Under 9s | Squad
The Bassett Huge Hitters were in action today as the boys from Bassett hosted Devizes, and what a performance it was. From the first whistle, this was a real team effort, making it impossible to single out a Player or Tackler of the Week.
As a squad, the team played some immense rugby — huge, well-timed tackles, brilliant support lines in attack, and relentless defence throughout the match. The teamwork on display was outstanding, with everyone backing each other up and giving 100% in every phase of play.
Special credit must go to the RWB team for including Devizes players within their teams due to a mismatch in numbers — a great example of sportsmanship and respect, and exactly what rugby is all about.
A fantastic day of rugby and another great showing from the U9s.
Under 11s | Olly & Jack
Jack was our Rucker of the week, unusual for a scrum half but JC doesn’t shy away from putting his head in the breakdown and shoulder in for a tackle. Top effort guys in the wet & muddy conditions!
Ravens Under 12s | Isla
Ravens Under 14s | Squad
Our Ravens represented the club brilliantly today, joining forces with West Berks Warriors and Oxford Quins to give our U14 girls valuable game time, but also contribute towards an excellent game of rugby.
It was great for us to see our players working well with different teammates and in unfamiliar positions, but they all adapted really well and completely enjoyed the experience. We also learned a lot about specific areas we need to focus on in training, so are now planning some exciting sessions for the coming weeks. What’s more, there was some fantastic rugby being played, and some strong individual performances too - the other teams’ coaches commented that our girls really added value to their squads, and it’s great that they all get on so well!
As a result, both Paul and I were very proud of our girls and would like to award ‘squad of the week’ to everyone who played today.
Under 14s | Benjamin
Player of the match for the U14s against Hungerford was Benjamin. The Hungerford players voted for Benjamin for great ball carrying and a well-taken try after a break from halfway. A great team performance - Bassett were behind on the scoreboard until the last quarter and kept playing right to the end - scoring three tries in the last ten minutes to win.
Under 15s | George
Player of the week went to George Hamilton-Farey. He lead from the front in both his attack and defence, picking up at least 7 turnovers in the first half alone and consistently got us on the front foot with his carrying ability.
Under 15s | Tom & Greg
Thank you to all those players and parents who travelled to Maidenhead.
The team started strong with a superb driving maul resulting in the first points of the game, most of the first half spent attacking and defending in the midfield utilising our structure. In the second half, the team lost momentum and structure at the start, but rallied in the final 15 minutes
Players of the match this week go to Tom and Greg, excellent defensive work, very high work rate and strong carries.
Colts | James
Continuing the theme of the weekend, rugby in the driving rain, the Colts were set the challenge of maintaining their shape despite the conditions.
In a strong performance against local rivals Trowbridge, the pack provided the base for the backs to dominate. James running strong lines in attack and decisive interventions in defence was our player of the match.
