Royal Wootton Bassett RFC are pleased to reveal that Gavin Ougan has been named as the club's new 1st Team Captain ahead of the 2018/19 season. The Openside Flanker takes over from David Hogg in the role. Gavin will be joined by a new Vice Captain, named today as Ieuan Clements.
Club Chairman, Chris Elias said, "With the new season fast approaching we are delighted to be able to announce Gav and Ieuan as the new 1st XV Captain and Vice-Captain. We also need to give a huge vote of thanks to Dave Hogg who as Captain, has led from the front over the last three years, earning the club promotion and maintaining a strong league position in South West 1."
Gavin Ougan (Left) takes over the reigns from David Hogg (Right) after 3 years as 1st XV Captain.
Bassett through and through, Gavin Ougan first played in 2000 for our Under 9s and rose through the club's Minis and Juniors sections, all the way to Colts - who he captained. Gavin was named Club Vice-Captain in 2015 and has led the Wiltshire All Blacks on a number of occasions in the past - but this will be the first time he has been Club Captain. The game must be in his blood - long term Bassett fans may recognise the Ougan surname from Gavin’s rugby playing father Phil.
Ougan said: “It was an honour to be asked to be Captain. Hoggy has done an awesome job over the last three years and hopefully I can carry this on."
"I feel that we have a young team that shows a lot of promise and works hard for each other. I know we can build upon last season and finish even higher in the league. It's also nice to get my name on the board as my dad never had the opportunity - so it's good to get one up on him and I'll make sure he doesn't hear the end of it!"
