James Firth: Giving Back to Rugby

I joined Royal Wootton Bassett RFC in the 2021/22 season, after finishing at Swansea University. A chat with Lowie and meeting the lads was all it took, I knew I wanted to be part of the club.

Our first year in National League 3 was tough, but it was the most enjoyable season I’ve had in club rugby. Debuting in a tight win over Drybrook and those memorable victories against Okehampton, Old Cents and Brixham - my final first-team appearance - are games I won't forget.

But rugby also gave me my biggest challenge. A serious concussion in pre-season against Trowbridge marked the start of a difficult journey. I stepped away to complete my masters at Loughborough and recover. After 15 months I returned, only to suffer another concussion 4 matches later. A final knock in my next outing made the decision for me. At 25, I had to walk away from the game I loved.

That’s why this next challenge means so much

On 12th April, I’ll be running the Brighton Marathon in support of the RFU Injured Players Foundation. The charity supports players and families dealing with life-changing injuries.

Rugby gave me friendships, memories and purpose. This is my way of giving back to the game that provided me with so much and help others facing far greater battles. If my story resonates,

I’d be incredibly grateful for your support. Find out more at: https://2026brightonmarathonweekend.enthuse.com/pf/james-firth
