Under 13s player Benjamin - one of our matchday ball boys - has found a new way to show his support for the club.
Having lost his right eye to Retinoblastoma at the age of 20 months, Benjamin now has a custom prosthetic eye bearing the RWBRFC badge.
He has been planning an eye using the club design ever since he found out he could have a custom-made prosthesis created alongside his standard colour-matched prosthetic.
With permission from the club, the unique result recently became a reality thanks to Benjamin’s prosthetist and the team at the National Artificial Eye Service.
Retinoblastoma (Rb) is a type of eye cancer that affects young children, mainly under the age of six. It develops in the cells of the retina, the light sensitive lining of the eye.
Around 40-50 cases are diagnosed in the UK every year – approximately one child a week.
Retinoblastoma is a childhood cancer with one of the best survival rates. In the UK, around 98 per cent of children will survive but early diagnosis is really important.
If you see one or more of the signs of retinoblastoma, be sure to get your child’s eyes checked urgently just to be safe.
